JOHN BULL'S CRIME or ASSAULTS ON REPUBLICS.
by Webster Davis (pdf)
Grootte = 5.96MB
Webster Davis was Assistant Secretary of the Interior in the US Government and he went to Southern Africa to meet with some of the Boer leaders, including Reitz and Kruger, and became a convinced advocate for their cause. In 1901 his book John Bull's Crime or Assaults on Republics was published in New York and it used photographs from the Boer side of the conflict.
P.J. Pretorius (pdf)
Grootte = 1.471MB
Adv Pretorius was by Nasionale Intelligensie betrokke - hy was byna totaal vernietig DEUR DIE REGSES/Konserwatiewes(AFRIKANKERS) in die RSA
oor die inhoud van sy boek.
MORNING LEADER Leaflets.
by MORNING LEADER (pdf)
Grootte = 1.57MB
LABOUR LEADERS AND THE WAR
by LABOUR LEADERS (pdf)
Grootte = 322KB
FELLOW WORKERS, March, 1901,
You have been led to believe that the war against the Boers was waged to secure justice and freedom for industrious Britons.
This was the pretence, but, as a matter of fact, President Kruger offered to give the Outlanders without war a more generous franchise than what the British Government demanded for them, on condition that all other matters in dispute were referred to arbitration.
Mr. Chamberlain himself, referring to Mr. Kruger's proposals, said "We accepted at least nine-tenths of the whole," and further admitted that in his judgment " the remaining tenth was not worth war."
THE PEACE IN SOUTH AFRICA
by Malcolm Quin (pdf)
Grootte = 562KB
The fact that representatives of the Boers still in the field have approached our military authorities in South Africa on the subject of
peace, and that their proposals have been under the consideration of our Government, mtist be my justification for addressing this letter to you.
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION and THE BOER WAR
by Sydney G. Fisher (pdf)
Grootte = 715KB
In other words, you go so far as to say that when a people are fighting for their political integrity and independence, a hopeless struggle for it ought not to be prolonged beyond what may be called the point of scientific defeat.
Rather than prolong it to desperation and death in the last ditch it is much better and more sensible to accept a dependent position of some sort, the position of a crown colony, or a charter colony with more or less varying degrees of colonial control, all of which your very unwise and altogether reckless great grandfather John Adam, and some of his friends used to describe as "political slavery."
THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR It's Causes and Lessons
an address by Rev H Jekill (pdf)
Grootte = 1.121MB
Hierdie is 'n aanbieding deur 'n prediker Rev H Jekill en is baie anti-Boer
We have heard with our ears, O God, ourfathers have told us, what work Thou didst in their days, in the times of old. Psalm xliv, i.
Lastly, what will the result of this war be ? We believe that England has a righteous cause, and that consequently victory will crown her efforts—that the Transvaal Republic, which has been a detriment to true prosperity, a stain on the map of Africa, will be wiped out forever, and when the Union Jack, the emblem of liberty, floats over Pretoria, then South Africa will rapidly become what the Creator intended it to be a delightful and prosperous land.
THE TRANSVAAL WAR. A Lecture by J Westlake
an address by J Westlake (pdf)
Grootte = 1.121MB
Hierdie was aangebied as 'n lesing by Cambridge, is redelik pro-Brit, maar het tog ander punte van belang.
You may take it as a lesson of history that ideals are always propagandist, and there is another circumstance to be mentioned about them, that they admit of no compromise. There may be a compromise between different measures proposed to be carried out, but between two ideals there is none. The franchise and representation asked for the Uitlanders by Sir Alfred Milner could not be otherwise than a death-blow to the Boer ideal. Now we may think, and I have no doubt that most of us do think, that the English ideal is the better of the two, but that will not give us a right to enter upon a crusade for its propagation.
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE WAR. An Open Letter to Dr. A Conan Doyle
an open letter by John M Robertson (pdf)
Grootte = 4.18MB
So much for the preambling pages in which you prepare your unprejudiced reader by giving him what you seem to admit is a "superficial" knowledge of South African history down to the first annexation of the Transvaal. The question is, could you have given him any better knowledge ? Are you not in reality as superficial as you require him to be? Or, to raise a question whichmore than once obtrudes itself on your better informed readers, are you capable of a moderately judicial procedure, even where the facts are fully before you, too plain to be missed ? I am loth to charge on you what you fatuously charge on the great mass of the educated population of the Continent a wish to ''poison the mind of the world." But I have read a good deal of unscrupulous polemic in my time ; and I am bound to say that on the strength of what I will presume to be mere helter-skelter sentiment, hand-tomouth investigation, and general incapacity for logical analysis, you reach results that wilful deceit could hardly advance upon.
THE STRUGGLE OF THE DUTCH REPUBLICS
Two Open Letters by Charles Boisseuain (pdf)
Grootte = 6.49MB
Your Grace's speech at York last week was so insulting to the press of the Continent, that I feel it my duty to try to refute it. And that even for England's sake.
It is always well to know both sides of a case, and how will you ever learn to know the truth, if Englishmen, who blame the diplomacy which caused this needless war, are called traitors, and foreign journalists, who condemn! it as cruelly unjust, are branded as either ignorant or corrupt, and that by a statesman like you, whose character is respected abroad as well as in England?
You speak as a judge in your own case. But foreigners, who respect England, who have such a veneration for your Queen, that they hope and pray that their young-Queen may take lier for example .... who are able by knowledge of more than one language to investigate on
both sides many a question, have a right to anticipate the verdict of History: they are as it were a Contemporary posterity.
We, the journalists of Holland, without any exception whatever, proclaim that this war is unnecessary and thus a crime .... that this war is the worst possible solution of the difficulties in South Africa.
BLOOD AND GOLD IN SOUTH AFRICA an Answer to Dr. Conan Doyle
by G. H. PERRIS (pdf)
Grootte = 3.94MB
Dr. Conan Doyle se beskrywing van die Boer, "Take a community of Dutchmen of the type of those who defended themselves for fifty years against all the power of Spain at a time when Spain was the greatest power in the world. Intermix with them a strain of those inflexible French Huguenots who gave up home........
WITH a great flourish, of trumpets there has lately been issued, through two of the leading London publishing houses, what claims to be a statement of the British " case " in regard to the South African War, from the pen of the creator of " Sherlock Holmes".
In these and many other quarters there is at least solid evidence to set over against Dr. Doyle's unsupported statement that the Boers " have stood for all that history has shown to be odious in the form of exclusiveness and oppression." This sort of vague abuse will not convince anyone, least of all the Continental readers for whom Dr. Doyle's pamphlet was chiefly written, at this time of day.
It smacks too much of the lying telegram about the women and children being in danger, foisted upon the British public on the eve of the Jameson Raid by the friends of the Johannesburg plotters.
DE STRIJD TUSSCHEN BOER EN BRIT
by Gen C R de Wet (pdf)
Grootte = 16.1MB
THE BOER WAR for Canadians
by E. B. BIGGAR (pdf)
Grootte = 2.28MB
Hierdie boek is baie erg anti-Boer, maar meer so teenoor die Transvalers as teenoor die Vrystaters.
WITH STEYN AND DE WET
by Phillip Pienaar of the Transvaal Telegraph Service (pdf)
Grootte = 9.0MB
Sien gerus Bladsy 89.
Early the next morning a couple of deserters were brought in.
They had been caught trying to slip past in the night. One said he had a sick son at home and was only going to see him, perhaps for the last time. The other was going home to fetch better horses, and so forth. They were so unfortunate as to call upon the Deity to testify to the truth of their assertions. This roused Steyn's ire.
"How dare you be guilty of such sacriledge ?" he cried. "It is this cursed habit of yours of using God's name upon every trivial occasion that makes our enemies think us a nation of hypocrites !
Back to your commandoes at once ! "
The men slunk away. We enjoyed their discomfiture in a messure, for, with all reverence for true religion, it must be confessed that many of these gentry thought psalm-singing all that was required of them, and did not hesitate to leave their less "elect" brethren to bear the brunt of the fighting.
HISTORY OF THE GREAT BOER TREK
by Henry Cloete and Broodrick Cloete in Service of the Queen (pdf)
Grootte = 6.8MB
"What Afrikaner Nation ?”
In the book, “The History of the Great Boer Trek and the Origin of the South African Republics”, published in 1899, the authors attempt to provide a record of the peoples of southern Africa and the historical animosity the Boers and English shared for one another.
Although blinded by his patriotism and the English right of empire building and their automatic domain over any nation seen as uncivilised or those who stood in the way of colonialism, he does make a particular effort to record the peoples (nations) of southern Africa.
The authors are Her Majesty’s High Commissioner for Natal, Hon. Henry Cloete (LLD) and his grandson W.B. Cloete – who attempt to enlighten their British countrymen, with whom the Empire is at war with (Anglo-Boer War in 1899). Of utmost importance is his meticulous categorisation of people, namely:
• Kafir (tribes)
+ many more BUT ALAS NO Afrikaner ! ! ! Strange is it not.
What’s quite evident from this account of history in 1899, is that no people called Afrikaners are recorded. Not one mention is made of them in the book and yet somehow today the Afrikaners claim to be Boer. The authors have never met or encountered the Afrikaners or acknowledged their role in the formation of the Natal Republic or any of the Boers, who they so fondly and persistently also call “the emigrants”.
These Boers or emigrants are clearly identified as those white people who left the domain of the British colonies and “protectorates” in the search of other lands – away from the colony. Those staying behind are then by default quite content with British rule and identity and therefore cannot claim to be the Boer people. These are naturally the colonials, settlers and Cape Dutch who stayed behind. However, today it is these very Afrikaners who claim to have a right to the Boer identity and heritage – as well as their land. (Dankie aan Pierre)
